Oratory of Santa Maria Vergine della Croce al Tempio – Florence, Italy
Nestled just around the corner from Piazza Santa Croce, our concert venue is more than just a beautiful setting — it’s a place where centuries of history and culture come together in harmony.
Originally founded in 1347, the Oratory of Santa Maria della Croce al Tempio served as the spiritual home of a brotherhood devoted to comforting those condemned to death. This stretch of road was once known as via de’ Malcontenti — the “Street of the Discontented” — a haunting reminder of Florence’s past.
The oratory stands on the site of a former Templar hospital, and thanks to a generous legacy from Simone di Buonarrota — an ancestor of Michelangelo — the building was expanded and embellished in the 15th century. A marble plaque, written by Michelangelo the Younger in 1633, still commemorates this powerful connection.
After a long period of abandonment, the oratory was restored in the early 20th century and is now an intimate, atmospheric space open once again to the public — this time through the universal language of music.
Today, it hosts a vibrant program of classical & opera concerts and cultural events, offering audiences a rare chance to experience live music in a setting that feels both timeless and deeply Florentine.
